How should a Lebanese online shop take payment?

How should a Lebanese online shop take payment?

Stripe is closed to Lebanese shops, so getting paid comes down to cash on delivery, wallets, WhatsApp orders and local card gateways, and each one costs you differently.

The checkout every online store tutorial assumes is closed to a Lebanese shop. Lebanon is not on Stripe's list of supported countries, and Shopify Payments depends on the same access. So the real question is which local route your buyers will trust, and what each one leaves you after fees.

The buyers are there. DataReportal counted 5.38 million internet users in Lebanon in October 2025, 91.8 percent of the population. We build e-commerce stores in Lebanon and wire every route below, so this is the order we switch them on, with the cost of each on a $40 order.

How can I accept payments online?

In Lebanon you accept payments online through four routes: cash on delivery, a wallet transfer, an order sent to WhatsApp, or a local card gateway. Stripe is not one of them, because its supported country list skips Lebanon. Most shops that sell well run two or three routes side by side.

  • Cash on delivery. The courier collects cash at the door and settles with you later.
  • Wallet transfer. The buyer pays from Whish or OMT before dispatch. Whish says it has more than 1000 locations in Lebanon, so a buyer without a card can still top up nearby.
  • Order on WhatsApp. A button on the product page opens a chat with the item already named, and you confirm the order by message.
  • Card gateway. areeba, NetCommerce, Tap or a bank gateway takes Visa and Mastercard on your own checkout, after a merchant approval.

Should a new shop start with cash on delivery?

Yes. Start with cash on delivery, because it needs no merchant account and Lebanese buyers already trust paying at the door. Your cost is the courier: Wakilni lists delivery across Lebanon within 24 to 72 hours for $6 to $15 and up, and that fee is spent whether or not the buyer accepts the parcel.

The weak point is the refused parcel. A buyer who orders at midnight may not answer the courier at noon. Each refusal costs a delivery you cannot bill and a day of stock on the road. The fix is one confirmation message before dispatch, and that is where WhatsApp earns its place in the checkout.

Ask your courier two questions before you sign. How often do they settle the cash they collect? What do they charge to bring a refused parcel back? The answers decide how much of your money sits in a van at any moment, and they belong in the contract, not in a phone call.

Does an Order on WhatsApp button sell more than a checkout?

For a small catalogue it often does, because a buyer who stalls at a checkout form will still send a message. We added an Order on WhatsApp button to a client's product cards this year. One tap opens WhatsApp with the item name typed in, and the shop confirms size, delivery day and payment in the chat.

The button costs nothing to run. It is a link to the shop's WhatsApp number with a prefilled message, so it works on any platform, including a store with no checkout at all. Buyers who found you on Instagram keep the conversation they started there. Nobody has to create an account.

It stops scaling when one person can no longer answer every chat within minutes. A chat order also leaves no cart data, so you never see which products people abandon. Past that point the button stays on the page as a second route, and a real checkout takes the main load. If you sell from a catalogue inside WhatsApp today, our guide to selling with WhatsApp Catalog in Lebanon covers that side.

What does each payment route cost per order?

On a $40 order, a card gateway takes $1.00 to $1.60, cash on delivery takes nothing, but every refused parcel burns a $6 to $15 courier fee. Card fees here use PayAtlas's Lebanon range of 2.5% to 4% per transaction. Courier fees are Wakilni's published range.

Shopify adds a second fee on top. Its pricing page charges 2% on third-party payment providers on the Basic plan, and every Lebanese gateway is third-party there. On the same $40 order that is another $0.80. WooCommerce and custom stores carry no such surcharge.

What is the best payment gateway in Lebanon?

The best payment gateway in Lebanon is the one that approves your business and settles in a currency you can spend, usually areeba, NetCommerce or Tap. All three take Visa and Mastercard, and Tap's Lebanon page also offers payment links you can send over WhatsApp before a full checkout exists.

We compared their fees, onboarding and settlement in areeba vs Tap vs Whish, so this post does not repeat that table. Two answers decide faster than any comparison: the currency your sales settle in, and how many days the money takes to reach an account you can use. Get both in writing before a developer touches the checkout. If someone told you to set up Stripe anyway, read whether Stripe works in Lebanon first.

When should a shop add card payments?

Add a card gateway once buyers outside Lebanon start ordering, or once refused parcels cost you more each month than card fees would. A buyer in Dubai or Paris cannot hand a Beirut courier cash for a parcel sent to family. A card is the only route that takes their money before you ship.

Run it on your own numbers. At PayAtlas's 2.5% to 4% range, a hundred card orders of $40 a month cost $100 to $160 in fees. Two refused parcels at Wakilni's $6 to $15 cost $12 to $30, plus the stock that came back late. Count refused parcels for one month before you decide.

When we build a store, the gateway application goes in during week one, because a merchant approval can take longer than the build. The store launches with cash on delivery and the WhatsApp button. Cards switch on after the gateway passes a test payment, a failed payment and a refund. Our own published price for a Voxire e-commerce build is $5,000 to $12,000, listed on our web design service page.

What should you actually do this week?

Turn on cash on delivery, put an Order on WhatsApp button on every product, and send your gateway application before you change anything else. Those three steps let you sell this week while the card approval runs in the background.

  1. Write the confirmation message you will send before every dispatch: item, total, delivery day and address.
  2. Ask areeba, NetCommerce and Tap for the settlement currency, the settlement days and every fee, in writing.
  3. Count refused parcels for a month. That number tells you when cards start paying for themselves.
  4. On Shopify, put the 2% third-party fee in your margin sheet now.

Then check the store on a phone. Our audit of Lebanese online stores found none that loaded fast on mobile, and a slow page loses the buyer before any payment route matters.
