We put Lebanese online stores through Google's mobile test: the median took 9.3 seconds to show a product, and most lacked WhatsApp and Arabic.
We put 18 Lebanese online stores through Google's mobile speed test, and not one showed its main content within 2.5 seconds. PageSpeed Insights loads each page on a simulated mid-range phone over a slow mobile connection, and Google's own guidance calls a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less good. The median store in our sample needed 9.3 seconds. The fastest needed 4.5.
That is the moment your Instagram ad pays for. A shopper taps, the page stays blank, and they swipe back to the feed. Voxire builds and repairs shops through its e-commerce development service in Lebanon, so read this as the test we run on a store before we quote on it. We do not name the stores we tested. The aggregate is the finding.
How fast do Lebanese online stores load on a phone?
Slowly: the median Lebanese store we tested took 9.3 seconds to show its main content on a simulated phone. None of the 18 stores met Google's 2.5-second target, eight took longer than 10 seconds, and the median mobile score was 60.5 out of 100, all measured through PageSpeed Insights on 2026-10-21.
| Check (62 stores unless noted) | Result |
|---|---|
| Main content shown within 2.5 s (18 tested) | 0% |
| Median time to main content (18 tested) | 9.3 s |
| Median PageSpeed mobile score (18 tested) | 60.5 / 100 |
| Mobile viewport tag present | 100% |
| WhatsApp link on the homepage | 39% |
| Tap-to-call phone link | 32% |
| Neither WhatsApp nor tap-to-call | 45% |

How we measured: we collected store homepages from Google results in Lebanon for 13 shopping searches in English and Arabic. We dropped directories and agencies, plus global brand sites, then fetched each homepage once as an iPhone would. The first 18 stores on the list also went through the mobile lab test. Lab numbers are harsher than fast home Wi-Fi, but they are the same yardstick Google publishes for everyone in its Web Vitals documentation.

Every store passed the basic mobile setup, so the viewport tag was never the problem. They are built for phones on paper. They are slow on phones in practice.
Why does a slow mobile store lose sales?
A slow store loses sales because the shopper leaves before the product appears. Deloitte's study for Google found that a 0.1 second mobile speed gain lifted retail conversions by 8.4% and average order value by 9.2%. Our median store sits almost seven seconds above target, not a tenth of a second.
Phones carry a large part of Lebanese browsing. StatCounter puts mobile at 47.16% of web page views in Lebanon in September 2026, and the share swings sharply from month to month. Several Lebanese e-commerce guides repeat that most shoppers buy on their phones without citing anything. The measured figure is lower, and it still covers nearly every second visit.

Speed losses stack on top of normal drop-off. Baymard Institute averages 50 studies into a 70.22% cart abandonment rate before load time is even counted. Speed is also a search problem. Google ranks your store from what its smartphone crawler sees, per Google Search Central, so a heavy phone page costs you twice.
What makes a Shopify store slow on a phone?
Apps, oversized photos and heavy theme sections slow a Shopify store far more than Shopify itself does. Shopify's speed guide names installed apps, image size and the number of sections on a template as the main causes. In our sample, Shopify stores were no faster than WordPress or custom builds, at a median 9.5 seconds.
The platform is not the villain. The same audit found slow stores on every platform we met. What they share is what sits on top of the platform:
- Apps that load their scripts on every page, including the homepage, even when they only serve checkout.
- A hero carousel or video that must load in full before the first product shows.
- Product photos uploaded at camera size and scaled down in the browser.
- Chat, review and pixel widgets that all start before the page paints.
The fix we make most often on Lebanese shop builds is the product grid on phones. A carousel that loads every slide first, or a desktop grid squeezed into one column, pushes the first product below a blank screen. On one retail build this year we replaced the mobile carousel with the product grid itself, so a shopper sees products on the first screen. Shopify also warns that uninstalling an app does not remove its code from the theme. That is why we read the theme, not the app list.
If you are still choosing a platform, our Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison for Lebanon weighs speed against monthly cost.
Do Lebanese shoppers still need a WhatsApp button on the store?
Yes: in Lebanon, WhatsApp is where a hesitant buyer asks about size, stock or delivery before paying. Yet only 39% of the stores we audited link to it from the homepage, and 45% offer neither WhatsApp nor tap-to-call. The WhatsApp Business app is free, so this gap costs nothing to close.
On every store we build, the WhatsApp link opens a message with the product name already filled in. The owner then knows which item the question is about without a back-and-forth. On phones it sits beside the add-to-cart button, not in a floating bubble that covers the checkout. Our guide to selling with the WhatsApp catalog in Lebanon covers the catalog side of the same habit.
Should a Lebanese online store be in Arabic?
Yes, at least for checkout, delivery details and returns if you sell beyond Beirut's English-reading shoppers. Only 11% of the stores we audited show any Arabic content at all. Right-to-left pages follow their own rules, set out in the W3C's guide to the dir attribute, and a theme that ignores them scrambles prices and phone numbers.
Voxire builds stores in Arabic and English from the first wireframe and tests both directions on real phones before launch. Our guide to starting an online store in Lebanon walks through the bilingual setup step by step. Translate the pages where money changes hands first. The blog can wait.
How much does it cost to fix a slow online store in Lebanon?
Most of the fix costs staff time or a fixed-price speed pass, not a new store. Voxire quotes the speed pass as a fixed price after testing the store. When the theme itself is the problem, a rebuild starts at the $3,000 floor Voxire publishes for e-commerce stores, per our web development pricing and Shopify's plan pricing for running costs.
| Fix | Who does it | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Add WhatsApp and tap-to-call links | Owner | Free |
| Resize and compress product photos before upload | Owner or staff | Staff time |
| Remove unused apps and their leftover code | Developer | Part of a fixed-price speed pass |
| Replace the mobile carousel with a product grid | Developer | Part of a fixed-price speed pass |
| Arabic checkout, delivery and returns pages | Developer and translator | Quoted with the speed pass |
| New theme or full rebuild | Agency | From $3,000; $5,000 to $12,000 bilingual with a Lebanese card gateway |

Do the first two rows before paying anyone. If the score barely moves after that, the theme or the apps are the cause, and that is where developer time earns its fee.
What should you actually do this week?
Run your homepage and your best-selling product page through PageSpeed Insights on mobile, then fix the three things that cost nothing. PageSpeed Insights is free and takes about a minute per page. If the main content takes longer than 2.5 seconds, start with apps and photos before you buy another ad.
- Test the homepage and your top product page on the mobile tab, and write down the Largest Contentful Paint.
- Open the store on your own phone over mobile data, not Wi-Fi, and count the seconds until a product appears.
- Remove any app you did not use this month, and ask your developer to clear its leftover code.
- Add a WhatsApp link with the product name prefilled, next to add-to-cart.
- Translate checkout, delivery and returns into Arabic before anything else.
Then test again. A store that still sits above five seconds needs work on the theme, not more traffic.
