Inside Lebanon the Arabic name and Saida carry the searches while Sidon matters mainly for buyers abroad, so each spelling needs its own place on your site.
Inside Lebanon, almost nobody types Sidon. Over the past twelve months, Google Trends for Lebanon scored search interest in the Arabic صيدا at 64, Saida at 38 and Sidon at 4. Many agency pages written for the city still lead with Sidon. If your website and your Google Business Profile both say Sidon, you are optimising for the spelling your local customers use least.
The fix is not to pick one name. Each of the three spellings has its own audience, and each belongs in a different place on your site.
Is it Saida or Sidon?
Both are correct, and a third form matters more than either. Wikipedia's entry for the city gives Sidon as the English name that came through Greek, Saida as the transliteration of the Arabic, and صيدا as the Arabic itself. The city is the third largest in Lebanon and the capital of the South Governorate. English speakers abroad met Sidon in history books. Lebanese people say Saida in whatever language they are speaking. For search, that small difference decides which of your pages collects the traffic.
Which spelling do Lebanese searchers use?
Arabic comes first, Saida second, and Sidon a distant third. In the Google Trends comparison for Lebanon, صيدا averaged 64 on the index over the year, Saida 38 and Sidon 4. The index is relative rather than a raw count: Google explains that results are scaled from 0 to 100 against all searches in that time and place. So the ratios are what matter. Arabic draws well over one and a half times the interest of Saida. Saida draws roughly nine times the interest of Sidon.
The keyword databases tell the same story. Ahrefs' free keyword generator, set to Lebanon, returned 3,363 keyword ideas containing صيدا, 2,749 containing saida and 728 containing sidon on 30 September 2026. The top Arabic ideas, such as prayer times for the city, sit in the band above 1,000 monthly searches. The top Latin ideas sit in the band above 100.

What are people looking for when they type each name?
Different things, and this is the part most keyword plans skip. The top and rising queries in Google Trends and the idea lists in Ahrefs split into three audiences:
- صيدا carries daily local life: city news, prayer times, and the names of neighbourhoods and nearby villages.
- Saida carries local commerce typed in Latin letters: weather, jobs, cinemas, Spinneys, Le Mall, LibanPost and Patchi.
- Sidon carries visitors: the Sea Castle, ten day forecasts, and the phrase sidon lebanon itself.
Read that list as a map of intent. A restaurant, a pharmacy or a clinic serving residents lives in the first two groups. A guesthouse or a heritage tour lives in the third.
| Spelling | Trends index, Lebanon | Ahrefs ideas, Lebanon | What the searcher wants | Where it belongs on your site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| صيدا | 64 | 3,363 | News, prayer times, neighbourhoods, local services | Arabic title tags, Arabic H1, GBP description |
| Saida | 38 | 2,749 | Weather, jobs, malls, shops, cinemas | English title tags, English H1, address line |
| Sidon | 4 | 728 | The Sea Castle, travel, history | Once per English page; more on tourism and export pages |

When does Sidon still matter?
When your buyer is outside Lebanon. Run the comparison worldwide with the country attached and the gap nearly closes. Google Trends worldwide gives saida lebanon 46, sidon lebanon 42 and صيدا لبنان 52 over the same year. Diaspora families and foreign buyers search from abroad, and they split close to evenly between the two Latin spellings. A guesthouse or a clinic courting expatriate patients needs Sidon written into its English pages. A pharmacy delivering in Abra does not.
Saida carries its own trap abroad. Saïda is also a city in Algeria, the capital of a province with the same name. A bare Saida page with no country signal can end up competing with Algerian results. Our post on SEO in Tripoli covers the same collision with Libya. The fix is identical: write Saida, Lebanon in the title, and put the country in your LocalBusiness schema.

Should a Saida business write its website in Arabic or English?
Both, as separate pages, with Arabic doing most of the local ranking work. The Trends numbers above put the largest pool of local demand in Arabic script. English still earns the Latin Saida searches and nearly every visitor from abroad. Google's documentation on localized versions recommends a separate URL for each language, linked with hreflang. It also notes that Google works out a page's language with its own algorithms rather than trusting the lang tag. A page that mixes both languages in one block is harder to classify and serves neither reader well.
City names are only the start of the Arabic keyword work. Our note on Levantine versus Modern Standard Arabic in search covers the rest. Write the way Saida speaks in body copy, and keep formal forms for headings where they read naturally.
This is how we handle it for clients. Every engagement on our Saida SEO service starts with this spelling split before a single page is written. We assign each keyword to one language and one URL, so the Arabic and English pages never compete for the same query. Sidon gets its own page only when the client sells to people outside the country.
How can I get my business to show up on Google Maps?
Claim and verify a Google Business Profile, then work on the three factors Google says it ranks by. Google's local ranking help page names relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you sit from the searcher. Prominence draws on links and reviews, and Google states that more reviews and positive ratings can help.
The spelling question reaches your profile too. Google's Business Profile guidelines require the business name to match the real world name used on your storefront and stationery. Adding Saida or Sidon to the name field when it is not on your sign breaks that rule and risks a suspension. Put the city in the address and the description instead, in Arabic and in English. Our Google Business Profile playbook for Lebanese businesses walks through every field.
Do I have to pay for my business to be on Google Maps?
No. The Business Profile itself is free, and Google's ranking page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What costs money is the work around it. That means photos, a steady flow of reviews, pages in two languages, and links from Lebanese sites. Ads can buy a sponsored slot on the results page, but they do not move your unpaid position on the map.
If you want that work done for you, our Saida SEO retainers start from $600/month, and mid-size South Lebanon businesses usually invest $800 to $1,500/month, as listed on the Voxire Saida SEO page. The first month always covers the spelling map and the profile, because those are the cheapest fixes with the fastest effect.
What should you actually do this week?
Six steps, none of which needs an agency:
- Open Google Trends for Lebanon and compare صيدا, Saida and Sidon with your own trade word added, such as dentist or مطعم.
- Check your title tags. English pages should lead with Saida, Lebanon, and Arabic pages with صيدا.
- Mention Sidon once per English page, in a natural sentence. Go further only if you sell to visitors or export.
- Make sure your Business Profile name matches your sign exactly, with the city in the address and description.
- If one page carries both languages, split it into two URLs and link them with hreflang.
- Ask five customers for a review, in whichever language they speak to you.
Do those six and your site will match the words your customers type.
