Is SEO Dead Now That AI Answers Everything? (2026)

Is SEO Dead Now That AI Answers Everything? (2026)

AI summaries cut clicks on simple questions, but buying searches in Lebanon still run through Google rankings, so the SEO budget should move rather than shrink.

Google still handles 95.7% of searches made in Lebanon, according to StatCounter's September 2026 figures. That number alone settles the loudest version of the argument. SEO is not dead. What is fading is one kind of page: the generic explainer that an AI summary now answers above the first link. If your SEO budget still pays mostly for those pages, you are funding the part of search that AI took. This post separates what shrank from what still sells, with the studies behind each claim.

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No, SEO is not dead in 2026, but clicks on simple questions have fallen sharply. Pew Research Center found users clicked a result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Google says its AI answers draw on pages already indexed for classic search.

The same Pew dataset holds two more numbers worth reading slowly. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself on only 1% of visits. They ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with a summary, compared with 16% of pages without one. That is the real loss. The person got an answer and left. Note what the study measured, though: 900 US adults in March 2025, and only 18% of all their Google searches produced an AI summary at all.

Which searches lose clicks to AI answers?

Informational questions lose clicks to AI answers, while buying searches mostly do not. Ahrefs found that 99.2% of keywords triggering an AI Overview are informational, and that a summary cut the top result's click-through rate by 34.5%. Someone choosing a clinic or an agency usually sees ordinary results instead.

We checked this from a Lebanese connection on 6 October 2026. The question "is seo dead now with ai" returned an AI Overview at the top of the page, shown below. The buying query "seo agency lebanon" returned none: directory listings and local agency sites filled the page. Pew's data points the same way. In its study, 60% of question searches produced a summary, against 8% of one or two word searches.

So the accounting for a Lebanese business is lopsided. A blog post explaining what a VAT invoice is will lose traffic. A service page for an accountant in Jounieh, or a product page for an air conditioner sold in Beirut, keeps most of its value. The person searching wants to choose and pay, not read a summary.

What is SEO called now with AI?

SEO is still called SEO, with two newer labels on top: AEO and GEO. AEO, answer engine optimization, means being the passage a search feature lifts as the answer. GEO, generative engine optimization, means being cited by assistants such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. Both depend on the same indexed, crawlable, useful page.

The labels matter less than one finding that separates them. Ahrefs found that 76% of pages cited in AI Overviews rank in Google's top 10 for the query. Across 15,000 prompts, though, only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10, with Perplexity the exception at 28.6%. Google's AI answer rewards the page that already ranks. The other assistants pull from a wider pool, so ranking alone does not guarantee a mention there.

How much of your search traffic is at risk from AI?

For most Lebanese businesses, the at-risk share is the informational part of their traffic, not the buying part. Pew found 18% of Google searches showed an AI summary in March 2025, and the lost clicks sit mostly in question-style searches. Sort your pages into those that answer questions and those that sell.

Arabic searches are not a shelter either. Google added Arabic to AI Overviews in May 2025, in an expansion to more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages. An Arabic explainer page now faces the same summary as an English one.

Does SEO have a future?

Yes, SEO has a future, because every AI answer still needs a source to read. Google states that appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode needs no technical requirement beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. The future belongs to pages worth citing, with original numbers and real local detail.

What fades is volume content. A post rewritten from the top three results gives an AI model nothing it cannot write itself. A post with a Lebanese price table or a regulation quoted from its source gives the model a reason to cite you. That shift favors small, specific businesses over large generic publishers, which suits a market as particular as Lebanon.

Voxire runs AI visibility inside its standard SEO retainer rather than as a separate product, and our own published pricing for it starts at $600 per month. Our audit checks rankings for buying queries first. Then it checks whether AI Overviews and ChatGPT mention the business for its core questions. Fixes go where both overlap.

What we change on a client site, in order:

  • Answer first. Each key page opens with a short, direct answer to the question it targets, the passage AI systems lift first.
  • Specifics in plain text. Prices and service areas sit in readable text, not inside images or PDFs.
  • Structured data. Schema markup for the organization and its services tells every engine what the page is.
  • Crawler access. robots.txt allows Googlebot, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot, and the CDN does not block them.
  • Machine-readable copies. voxire.com publishes an llms.txt file and serves a Markdown version of each page to agents that request one. Google says its AI features need nothing extra, so we treat this as cheap insurance for the other assistants, not a Google ranking factor.

Here is what an answer-first rewrite looks like, on an illustrative dental clinic page in Beirut. Before: "Welcome to our clinic, where patient care has always been our passion." After: "Our Achrafieh clinic places dental implants in two visits, with the price confirmed in writing after a free scan." The first sentence gives a model nothing to quote. The second answers who and where in one line that an assistant can lift with the clinic's name attached.

Should you cut your SEO budget because of AI?

No, cut the informational filler you pay for, not the SEO budget itself. Move that spend to service pages and original local data, which buying searches and AI citations both reward. Mid-size Lebanese businesses competing nationally typically invest $1,000 to $2,000 per month with Voxire's SEO service for that mix.

The test for any agency, ours included, is whether its report separates informational traffic from buying traffic. A report that shows one blended traffic line hides exactly the shift described above. Our guide to choosing an SEO agency in Lebanon lists the other questions worth asking before you sign.

What should you actually do this week?

Spend this week measuring, not rebuilding. Five checks show whether AI answers are costing you clicks or customers, and none of them needs a new tool or a new budget line. Run them yourself before you change a single page or call an agency.

  1. Search your three most important buying queries from a Lebanese connection and note whether an AI Overview appears.
  2. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity who offers your service in your city, and record whether they name you.
  3. In Search Console, split your top pages into informational and commercial, then compare their clicks quarter on quarter.
  4. Rewrite the opening sentence of your two main service pages so it answers the buyer's question with a concrete detail.
  5. Open your robots.txt and confirm it does not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot.

The results tell you which pages earn customers and which only answered questions.
